Abstract

Ayahuasca is the tea produced through the decoction process of Jagube lianas (Banisteriopsis caapi) and Chacrona leaves (Psychotria viridis) infusion, a ritualistic hallucinogen which has reached our present through many religious doctrines. In Brazil, the religious tradition users who drink the Ayahuasca are from Santo Daime, the Barquinha and the União do Vegetal. This drink contains the active principle N,N-dmethyltryptamine, considered as a psychotropic substance prescribed by 344/1988 SVS/MS as well considered as a drug by 11.343/2006 Brazilian Law: nevertheless, the religious use of Ayahuasca has been recognized by CONAD (4/2004 Resolution ) and

ratified by the 1/2010 Resolution. However, biased opinion without scientific proof has been generated. In order to contribute to the discussion, the following paper presents a systematized knowledge about the tea.
