One risk factor for developing alcohol addiction in adult life is being the child of an alcoholic. In this context, we present a review of literature published in the last 5 years in Medline, Psyclit and Lilacs on children and adolescents with alcohol-addicted parents. Out of 300 studies, 27 papers were selected, resulting in 3 theme areas: having alcohol-addicted parents associated with the childs or adolescents affective and behavioral characteristics; co-occurrence with another disorder and the childs or adolescents characteristics; and factors to protect the childs or adolescents mental health.
