The paper aims to present reflections on the psychoanalytic/psychodynamic-oriented psychotherapy, arguing its possible applications in the treatment of patients with alcohol and other drugs use problems related. The main conceptions of this approach are delineated, and the theoretical basis underlying their techniques is described, as well as the epistemologic foundations that support the practice of the psychotherapy. After that, the results of research are revised and offer scientific evidences that indicate its effectiveness in the field of the substance abuse treatment.
