Effect of self-esteem on alcohol and tobacco consumption in adolescents from the rural area of Nuevo León, Mexico

Alcohol and tobacco consumption is a problem that affects adolescents. This study aimed to determine the consumption of tobacco and alcohol and the effect of self-esteem on this consumption. A descriptive and correlational design was used. The results showed that adolescents consumed more alcohol than tobacco. Differences in alcohol consumption were observed according to gender, with men consuming more than women. Finally, self-esteem showed an effect on alcohol consumption. Adolescents who do not consume alcohol and tobacco showed higher self-esteem that those who consumed these substances.
