Alcohol consumption in adolescents and its relation with psychological violence in dating relationships

Abstract

A problem related to alcohol abuse in youth is the violence. This study aimed to describe the prevalence of alcohol consumption, as well as patterns of consume in youth; to know the percentage of women who have suffered psychological violence; the proportion of men who have exerted psychological violence and the relationship of alcohol consumption and psychological violence during dating among adolescents from Monterrey, N.L., Mexico. Descriptive correlational design was used. Results showed higher proportions of risky and dependent alcohol consumption for men than women. In total, 80.3% of women had been victim of psychological violence and 77.4% of men had exerted psychological violence. Positive and significant relationship between alcohol consumption and psychological abuse by men was evidenced. Harmful consumption in women was positively related to being victim of psychological abuse.
