Abstract

This qualitative, descriptive and exploratory study aimed to identify the role and the representation of nurses from health care centers in relation to alcoholism. The theoretical framework of the Social Representations was used. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight nurses. The following categories emerged from the speeches: representation of alcoholism; basic care - possibilities of care to alcohol dependents, and factors that contribute for care to alcohol dependents. Results point out attitudes that are based on perceptions formed by personal experiences. Lack of the nurses' commitment to the alcoholism issue and care ruled by the biomedical or the disease model was verified.
