Abstract

In this study, a revision of the literature was carried out to identify articles that show the association and relation between alcoholism and tuberculosis. Results and discussion: chronic alcoholism is considered an important risk factor for the development of tuberculosis, since these patients display high incidence rates of cases and more advanced forms of pulmonary tuberculosis. Alcoholics reveal higher treatment abandonment rates and risks of developing collateral effects of antituberculosis medication in comparison with non-alcoholics. This determines some specific actions in the Tuberculosis Control Program, such as the indication of the Directly Observed Treatment Short-course (DOTS) to these patients.
