This reflection aims to disseminate knowledge about care to people with depressive disorders. Its authors address historical and clinical aspects concerning depression and nursing care. The literature emphasizes that if the disease is diagnosed and treated early, social and personal damage can be prevented, which adds to the responsibility of professionals at all care levels. In view of this situation, the implementation of education programs in health care as well as in nurses basic qualification programs is suggested, revision of concepts, approaches and treatments. Clinical professionals and faculty must be alerted to the importance of therapeutic actions in depression at all complexity levels of nursing care.
