Abstract

This article presents the results of a case study that analyzed the dubbing  translation of the popular American series Grey’s Anatomy (Season 18), specifically focusing on dialogues involving the non-binary character Kai Bartley. The main goal of the study was to conduct a comparative analysis of the use of the pronouns they/them in the original version and the version adopted in the Brazilian dubbing of the series.
Data from the annual report Where We Are on TV, published by GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation), were also analyzed to demonstrate the growth of LGBTQIAPN+ representation in audiovisual productions. In order to establish the
theoretical framework, the concepts of Díaz-Cintas (2009) and Chaume (2020), from the field of Audiovisual Translation and Dubbing, as well as those of Gomillion and Giuliano (2011) and Konelly and Cowper (2020), who address the impact of
representation on the self-perception and acceptance of LGBTQIAPN+ individuals were adopted. The results demonstrate that gender-neutral language was adopted in most of the analyzed cases in the dubbing translation of the series: among the 31 proposed translation forms, 29 employ gender-neutral language, which can be seen as a reflection of strategies for inclusion and representation of LGBTQIAPN+ characters.
