Abstract

Abstract: The Second Sex, by Simone de Beauvoir, is one of the major works of contemporary Western feminism, still resonating in research and discussions on gender and feminisms. Over the last decades, several studies have examined this Beauvoirian classic in the field of Translation Studies, particularly in Feminist Translation Studies (Simons, 1983; Moi, 2002; Godayol; Potez Pichot, 2013). However, despite the numerous studies discussing its publication in different languages, such as English, Spanish, Catalan, and Mandarin, no research had yet focused on its translation into Portuguese. Therefore, this article aims to present an analysis of the Brazilian translation of The Second Sex, specifically the chapter “The Married Woman”, translated by Sérgio Milliet and published in the 1960s. Thus, we intend to observe how certain translation choices produce semantic, stylistic, and ideological effects that impact the discursive construction of the work in the Brazilian context. Based on this analysis, we then seek to establish a relationship between gender and translation, revealing, eventually, a masculine translational voice in an apparently “faithful”, “neutral” and “objective” translation of a feminist text. Our analysis is, therefore, grounded in a comparative study between the original text and its translation. Regarding voice and gender in translation, our reflection is guided by the research of Wuilmart (2009) and the various studies on Beauvoir's work within the scope of Feminist Translation Studies, mentioned earlier.
