Abstract

The circulation of literary works between the Spanish and Brazilian contexts cannot be understood merely as a displacement between two geographical spaces but must instead be situated within a transnational space of circulation structured by unequal relations of symbolic power among different languages and literary traditions. Within this sphere, works do not simply move from one place to another; rather, they are reconfigured through translation, which functions as a practice of cultural mediation, adapting them to the norms and hierarchies of the receiving system. In this paper we analyze circulation of the Brazilian translation of Alicia Giménez Bartlett’s bestselling novel Ritos de Muerte, with particular attention to the feminist dimension of the work. It aims to discuss some of the meaning effects produced by the translation strategies employed in the treatment of lexical items in the Portuguese and English translations.
