Abstract

In this paper, we investigate the adaptive strategies employed in transposing Victor Hugo’s novel Les Misérables (1862) into the comic book format. Produced for the Classics Illustrated series, the adaptation features a script by Alfred Sundel and interior illustrations and painted cover by Norman Nodel, here examined in the 1968 edition. By comparing the adaptation with the adapted work—drawing on Adaptation Studies, Image Studies, and theories regarding sequential art—we discuss the primary strategies for narrative condensation and their graphic-visual representation. Finally, we address how the novel is (re)positioned within this new medium, highlighting the potential of comics and graphic narratives for disseminating world literature.
