Abstract

This paper aims at discussing the intersection between concepts and methods of Descriptive Translation Studies applied to subtitling and reflections about the translator´s subjectivity. In order to achieve this aim, two important concepts of descriptive studies are initially presented, those of assumed translation and norm, according to which the practice of subtitling is focused from a systemic, descriptive and functional perspective. The issue of subjectivity is then introduced, an issue that has not received so far enough attention by the so-called culturalist approaches of translation, and which is here discussed through its interface with Psychoanalysis. This intersection has as an ultimate goal to open up a new theoretical and methodological path in the field of Translation Studies, in a way that it takes into better account the subjective decisions adopted in translation processes.
