Abstract

The two readings of terminology that are current today consider the term under the approach of prescriptivism or of the theories of linguistic variation. To some authors, the term is the denomination of a univocal notion; to others, terms are variant entities, because they form part of distinct communicative situations and function in the diversity of language(s). In the context of varieties, the grammar that rules terms is not other than the one that structures lexemes. What makes terms different from lexemes is the pragmatic semantics through which we identify the term's grammatical and conceptual movement. A possible model of analysis is the one based on functionalism, which enables the creatin of categories and types of terminological variants in consonance with usage.
