Abstract

The writer presents certain aspects of terminological work in a corporate environment from the point of view of a technician (civil engineer) with effective participation in business corporations and in their National Fora - the Brazilian Technical Standards Association (ABNT) and the National Institute of Metrology, Standaridization and Industrial Quality (INMETRO). In Brazil, there is an evident dichotomy between the terminological work as conducted by professional linguists and by the technicians which create and make use of terminology in the several fields of (industrial, commercial, etc.) activities. It is therefore generally accepted that the several actions conducted in these fields should be integrated through a single Terminology Comission, with structure and objects similar to the TC 37 of theInternational Organization for Standardization (ISO). "While it goal is not yet attained, however, which is the current situation we find in Brazilian corporations and at the ABNT/INMETRO level? Tkis paper proposes an answer to this question and attempts to draw the attention of those concerned with the updating of Brazilian terminology to the problems arising from its as yet underdeveloped stage and to the necessary efforts to overcome this stage with all due speed, otherwise, our dialogue, even with our Latin-American partners, will soon prove impossible. Not to standardize is to remain stationary in time.
