Abstract

Terminology as a scientific discipline started in Austria, in the 30's, motivated by the needs presented by international exchange. Its principles were soon adopted and adapted by the Soviets. Under the influence of the Prague Circle of Linguistics, a third School of Terminology was started, on linguistic bases. These three schools share the incorporation of the referent and of logics, but approach the treatment of concepts and terms in different manners. The principles of the Vienna school gave rise to a specific committee at the International Standardization Organisation (ISO). ABNT has recently created a Committee for developing the Brazilian standards on the subject.
