“My dear Salim”: Salim Miguel’s cultural mediation in contact with portuguese-speaking intellectuals in Africa (1950s)

The aim of this article is to discuss the cultural mediation practices carried out by Salim Miguel (1924-2016), member of the Grupo Sul, in the relations between him and intellectuals residing in Portugal’s overseas colonies during the 1950s. The correspondence exchanged between Salim and Viriato da Cruz, António Jacinto, José Graça, Augusto dos Santos Abranches and others is taken as source of the investigation. In our understanding, the cultural mediation was decisive for the circulation of Grupo Sul’s productions in other regions of the world, in addition to enabling the existence of productions that were at constant risk of censorship and the dissemination of prohibited works on African territory.
