Abstract

The representation of the death of Angola’s first president in Portuguese newspapers can help understanding the character of the angolan poet, as well as providing elements to understand Portugal at that time and its relation with Angola.

Author Biography

  • Francisco Topa, Universidade do Porto

    Associate Professor with «Agregação» at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto and an integrated member of CITCEM. He teaches in the areas of Brazilian Literature and Culture, Textual Criticism, African Literatures and Folk Literatures. Since 2019, he has been responsible for the Agostinho Neto Chair at FLUP and, since 2023, he is head of the Department of Portuguese and Romance Studies. He was a visiting professor at several Brazilian universities and also at the Università Roma Tre (Italy) and the University of Zagreb (Croatia). His research has been directed towards Brazilian and Portuguese literature, African literature and some areas of folk and marginal literature. Among the approximately 260 works he published, 29 of which are books, it is possible to highlight the following volumes, all from 2023: Mal-amados ou sequestrados? (Autores e textos brasileiros de seis e setecentos); «Nesta turbulenta terra» (Estudos de literatura angolana); África nossa, Áfricas deles (leituras de Marrocos, Cabo Verde e Moçambique); «Coisas que não levam a nada» (leituras portuguesas de literatura brasileira).
