Segundo o Global Burden of Disease, o acidente vascular encefálico (AVE) é uma das principais causas de Years Lived with Disability (YLD), ou seja, anos vividos com incapacidade. O YLD é uma medida utilizada pelo GBD para quantificar a carga de incapacidade causada por doenças ou lesões, levando em conta a gravidade da condição e sua duração globalmente. Durante o período de 1990 a 2010, houve um aumento na incidência do AVE, principalmente em países de baixa e média renda.
