Abstract

Objective: To determine the existence of correlations between Handgrip Strength (HGS) in individuals with stroke sequelae and demographic, clinical, and functional variables. Method: Observational, cross-sectional study with a control group, based on the evaluation of data from 92 patients (56% women; mean age: 56 years) with stroke sequelae, inpatients at a Brazilian public health rehabilitation center, within a multidisciplinary care setting. For comparison purposes, a control group of 115 healthy participants (66% women; mean age: 39 years) was formed. Assessments were performed using standardized protocols and trained evaluators. Results: The final regression model (r²= 0.54) demonstrates that sex (p <0.0001), age (p <0.0129), and the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) score (p <0.0002) are the variables that best explain the variations in FPM among patients with stroke sequelae. Conclusion: The analysis of correlations between FPM and demographic, clinical, and functional variables consolidates FPM as a vital indicator to guide therapeutic strategies and monitor the recovery of autonomy in post-stroke patients.
