Between transparency and opacity: Martin Gusinde's photographs of the Hain Selk'nam as symptom images

This article offers a reflection on the threshold between transparency and opacity in the photographs of the Hain ceremony of the Selk'nam people, taken by anthropologist Martín Gusinde in the 20th century in Tierra del Fuego, Chile. Although these images have been understood as documents, as they are associated with the Austrian anthropologist's research, this study focuses on the notion of “symptom” proposed by Didi-Huberman, who revisits Freud's studies in The Interpretation of Dreams (1900) to shift the concept from clinical vocabulary to the field of visual thought and image criticism.
