Abstract

We will consider White Elephant (Elefante blanco, 2012), by Pablo Trapero, by analyzing the urban space that it represents/creates. This investigation will be modulates by the idea of the ruin, a specter of both failure and resistance, which integrates a realm of ideas related to a complex universe such as the slum – among them, violence as a constituent of everyday life. This movement occurs through the experience of characters foreigner to that world, who enter it, plunging into a learning path that, like everything in the movie, has the double face of destruction and construction. We will also develop a quick exploration of space in Trapero’s other films and of the slums in Argentine cinema.

    Natalia Christofoletti Barrenha é pesquisadora de cinema latino-americano e professora, doutora pelo Programa de Pós-Graduação em Multimeios do Instituto de Artes da Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp). Autora do livro A experiência do cinema de Lucrecia Martel: resíduos do tempo e sons à beira da piscina (Alameda Editorial e Fapesp, 2014). Edição em espanhol no prelo pela Prometeo Editorial (Argentina). Realiza pesquisa de pós-doutorado no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Teoria e História Literária do Instituto de Estudos da Linguagem da Unicamp, com apoio da Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (Capes). Atua também na programação e produção de mostras audiovisuais, como “Histórias extraordinárias: cinema argentino contemporâneo” (realizada desde 2016 em cidades como Curitiba, Rio de Janeiro e São Paulo) e “Um lugar ao sol. A cidade em disputa no cinema brasileiro contemporâneo” (2018, São Paulo).
