Absorption, Theatricality and the French Painting Tradition in Henri Matisse’s Work

Abstract

The article examines the notions of “absorption” and “theatricality” proposed by Michael Fried and retook by Yve-Alain Bois in his texts on Henri Matisse’s work. One of the main questions addressed by the author is the way the artist’s work resists the volatile regime of perception precipitated by industrial modernity and how it urges a modality of attention at one time diffuse and contemplative. In addition, it discusses how this modality of attention, unique to Matisse’s painting, seems to synthesize two opposite aspects of French pictorial tradition: the Rococo dynamic of a flickering gaze and the absorptive state which marks paintings by artists such as Greuze and Chardin.

  • Ilê Sartuzi, Universidade de São Paulo (USP), Brazil

    Ilê Sartuzi é artista e pesquisador. Desenvolve seus estudos na USP, onde organiza uma série chamada Debates da Arte Contemporânea. Em 2018, sua pesquisa “Imagens da alteridade na obra de Henri Matisse” recebeu a bolsa de incentivo da Fapesp. Trabalhou no Núcleo de Pesquisa e Formação do Centro Universitário Maria Antonia da USP e, como pesquisador, produtor e assistente, para o curador suíço Hans Ulrich Obrist, acompanhando seu projeto de entrevistas no Brasil (2016-2017). Colaborou com a revista de arte contemporânea mexicana Terremoto e com a revista carioca Jacarandá. É cocriador e organizador do Projeto arte_passagem; convidou a artista carioca Ana Matheus Abbade para colaborar com a intervenção Faço pé e mão (2018), na vitrine. Suas exposições mais recentes incluem o Programa de Exposições do Museu de Arte de Ribeirão Preto (2017; 2015), PAREDÃO, no Centro Cultural São Paulo (CCSP – 2018); Ainda não (2017) e VERBO (2018), estas duas últimas na Galeria Vermelho, São Paulo, em colaboração com o grupo de pesquisa Depois do Fim da Arte, que acompanha desde 2015.
