Abstract

The Golden Law (1888) was a decisive and problematic event in Brazil’s history. The discourses propagated around it often exclude the participation of black population in the process of conquering freedom. The same is true for the images derived from this episode, which reflect the ideology and values of that time mainly from the perspective of the wealthy social classes. As the black population was set aside from this process, it was designated to perform only widely disseminated specific archetypes. This article analyses the Column for the Liberty of Slaves, monument created in the city of Rio Grande, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, during that social context, to investigate the process of exclusion and representability implied in its creation.
