Non-Binary Art and the Brazilian State of Crisis: Dead Flowers by Jota Mombaça

In times of social and political crisis evidenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, the demands and expressions of a fragile Brazilian society gain strength: in the last two years, new rights for non-binary people have been historically conquered. The presence of new nonbinary artists in Brazilian contemporary art was also made synchronous in artistic spaces such as during the 34th Edition of the Bienal de São Paulo in 2022, initially postponed by the pandemic, where artists such as the non-binary Jota Mombaça participated with the work Spell to become invisible. Therefore, how are we making ourselves visible in scenarios that threaten democracy and minority rights in Brazil in pandemic years? Reflections on the subject are brought in this article through the analysis of different works by the artist Jota Mombaça intertwined with a brief overview of the State crises and the problems of non-binary existential illegibility opposed by the achieved rights of our acronym in Brazil, between 2020 and 2022.
