In the essay “The Aesthetics of Noise”, Torben Sangild seeks to define noise and briefly outline its history in society. He classifies it into three categories: acoustic noise, communicative noise, and subjective noise. Sangild then goes on to explore noise in rock and electronic music and how the use of the guitar, samples, and glitches by bands such as Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, Merzbow and Curd Duca defined the effect and aesthetic power that noise can convey. Sangild treats noise as an aesthetic phenomenon, an explosive feeling that can have a critical potential in a society immersed in rationality and individuality.
