Based on a reflection on recent environmental issues in Brazil, this article investigates the nexus between art and ecological thinking in the country in the 19th and 20th centuries. The first part of the article deals with the representation of tropical nature and how these images, disseminated globally since the 19th century, were responsible for the transformation of Brazilian nature into a landscape. The second deals with the question of the relationship between local nature and popular or vernacular traditions, which would function as sources for ecological thinking developed by modern Brazilian artists.
