Escrito en la etapa inicial de la carrera del artista y investigador estadounidense Allan Sekula, El tráfico en las fotografías (1981) es un ensayo que investiga y cuestiona la noción de lenguaje universal atribuida a la fotografía. Utilizando un enfoque materialista-histórico, el autor analiza la función política desempeñada por los discursos estéticos y científicos vinculados al medio fotográfico, dentro de los cuales la noción de universalidad cumple una función de dominación cultural y económica que tiene como fundamentos ideológicos la familia nuclear patriarcal, la lógica de consumo capitalista y el imperialismo.
