This study draws on its author’s experience as a researcher of modern Brazilian art to articulate reflections on her involvement in this field of research and problematize the very concept of modern or modernism, its entry into the university, and, finally, the dilemmas intrinsic to the global expansion of the discipline. This study connect these issues to answer the question that serves as the title of this study about the relevance, validity, or necessity of history of art.
