Abstract

This is a transcript of Ronaldo Brito’s speech in
the seminar Art in Brazil 1970-2020: Dislocations of Criticism and Art History, held at the Rio Art Museum on May 8, 2024. It raises important questions regarding the current situation of art and art criticism with the rise of digital and informational media and the representation of social markers that problematize the hegemonic discourses of Western culture. The author discusses the transformations of the artistic experience and the notion of public opinion in a globalized world and highlights the notion of Historical Consciousness directly associated with criticism.

Author Biography

  • Ronaldo Brito, Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro

    Atua como professor no Programa de Pós-Graduação em História Social da Cultura do Departamento de História da Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), onde ministra disciplinas em história e teoria da arte. Lecionou no Departamento de Teatro da Universidade do Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO) de 1974 a 2001. Escreveu monografias de artistas como Sérgio Camargo, Iberê Camargo, Eduardo Sued, Jorge Guinle, Oswaldo Goeldi entre outros. Ronaldo Brito é autor do livro Neoconcretismo: Vértice e Ruptura do Projeto Modernista Brasileiro e de Experiência Crítica (org. Sueli de Lima). Possui também inúmeros artigos e textos críticos sobre arte brasileira e sobre artistas estrangeiros como Richard Serra e Sean Scully.
