In the essay The invention of landscape, the philosopher Anne Cauquelin investigates possible relations between the Western imagery production on the “landscape” genre and the visual perception of space as landscape. By understanding landscape as a peculiar “symbolic form”, the philosopher argues that its perception results from a perennial process of learning that creates both the existence of landscape as an object of sensibility and the conditions for its identification with reality. This article seeks to present how the concept of symbolic form arises and unfolds itself in that essay, emphasizing the referential outline and Cauquelin’s authorial articulation in face of the neo-Kantian origin of the concept in Ernst Cassirer and its resumption in art history by Erwin Panofsky.
