The Role of Critique from the 1970s up to Today

After pointing out fundamental issues of the productive context to densify and professionalize the Brazilian art system in the 1970s, the authors of the book The Role of Criticism in the Formation of Contemporary Art Thought in Brazil in the 1970s identify significant transformations in the critical art sphere at least since the mid-1980s that add contradictions and complexities to the ongoing processes of densification of our art circuit. The changes of the last 30 years have redefined hierarchies between instances and agents of the art system. The market gained an unprecedented role in the value-building chain of the work of art and criticism, as idealized in modernity, has lost its social raison d’être. In this new context, the proposed question is: would the critical production thought from and in our peripheral context still have something to tell us? Otherwise, would it be possible to dialectize our critical fortune, developed throughout the 20th century, with the urgent issues of our present?
