This study discuss the relationship between theater and democracy based on a pedagogical experience. Theatrical practice dialogues with ideas about democracy and the critique of neoliberalism by authors such as Ryngaert, Desgranges, Rachel, Barbosa, Casara, Chauí, Adorno, Rancière, and Arendt. Analyzing the current historical moment, we discuss how artistic and pedagogical thinking and practice in theater can approach emancipation, the experience of the collective, and the breaking of hegemonic paradigms. We focus on a case study, highlighting two issues to understand the democratic experience: group agreement and the construction of the game rules. We observed that the aesthetic experience, playing, the awareness of the rules, and group agreement create the conditions for participation in the democratic process.
