Dances of Black Families: brief conceptualizations

Abstract

This article seeks to share understandings about the dances of black families. It presents a theoretical perspective on choreographic manifestations created by people of African descent in family contexts. To this end, it discusses the inadequacy of concepts that have historically served to make black poetics invisible; it presents the dances of black families as anti-colonial epistemologies that are structured through the recomposition of choreographic occurrences and proposes some constitutive principles of dances of black families, namely: the act of dancing as a teaching practice, immersion or conviviality as a dimension of the learning process and the connection between experience and ancestry. Methodologically, an explanatory approach based on bibliographic analysis is established. Finally, it is clear that further research is urgently needed in order not only to conceptually locate the definition of dance of black families, but above all to carry out comparative studies in different communities.
