This paper presents a brief overview of the production and circulation of Anton Pávlovitch Chekhov's major plays in European and American stages in the early twentieth century. This retrospective has a specific scope and intends to show how the “myth of chekhovism” was formed through these staging. This reading was implemented in a non-linear path and with some conflicts, but, at the same time, it influenced in decisive ways the first moments of Chekhov’s Brazilian reception.
