Abstract

The present article seeks to present and comment on the translation into Portuguese of
the preface and the first chapter of the book Atipa. Romain guyanais (1885) by Alfred Parépou. The
work is considered the first text written in Guyanese Creole. Although titled a novel, Atipa is far
from the characteristics surrounding this literary genre. This book is a testimony to the linguistic,
cultural and social richness that this small country, situated in South America, held for years before
the appearance of its first translation into French in the 1960s

A capa foi composta pela designer Ana Luíza Costa Ribeiro e busca representar a diversidade cultural e étnica da Guiana Francesa. Dois elementos se destacam: em primeiro plano vemos uma referência à Touloulou, personagem da tradição carnavalesca. Como inspiração para os tons e composição cromática, teve-se como referência o ensaio Touloulou do fotógrafo guianense Ronan Liétar e nas cores da própria bandeira. Ao fundo, temos representada uma releitura da arte Timbé, elemento marcante das artes plásticas guianenses.
