Brazilian parents’ perceptions of the media representation of autism

This study evaluated the representation of autism and parental perceptions in television series. Based on diagnostic criteria, the protagonists of Atypical and The Good Doctor were analyzed. A total of 386 parents participated, mostly middle-class mothers with higher education. The characters exhibited level 1 support needs, with more atypical behaviors observed in Atypical. Parents reported that the characters resembled individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder, but not specifically their own children. The most frequently cited emotions were sadness and trust. Media plays an important role but needs to better represent neurodiversity.
