This study aims to highlight the common ground in which feminist and queer theoretical discussions take place, suggesting a likely interpellation of both. Departing from an understanding that there are possible theoretical investigations between feminisms and queer theory, it is noted that questions of gender and sexuality are central in the analysis of Rita Mae Brown’s debut novel Rubyfruit Jungle. This investigation emphasises that, despite being read as a lesbian work, Brown’s novel brought to light in the 1970s theoretical possibilities which would only be discussed with the development of queer theory much later. Taking into consideration the contributions of Butler (2015, 2019), Miskolci (2016), Rubin (2016, 2017) and others, it is argued that a political analysis of the novel, embracing feminist and queer theories, is not only possible, but also symptomatic of new possibilities of the expansion of investigative fields.
