This article aims to revisit Maria Lucia Medeiros's “Era uma vez” short story, as well as Clarice Lispector's “Restos de Carnaval”, in order to compare them in their theme that prioritizes a look at female characters in childhood and how such characters become frustrated with their mothers and are forced to become mature. Therefore, we discuss, first, the theoretical support of Feminist Literary Criticism, childhood as a space of social construction and, finally, we propose the comparative reading of these stories. To do so, we read the texts of Simone de Beauvoir (2008), Adrienne Rich (1977; 2017), Elizabeth Badinter (1985) and Susana Funck (2016), among others.
