The "Jimbandas" in Um Defeito de Cor under the perspective os quare analytics and decoloniality

This study aims to analyze the characters Jongo and Adriano in the novel Um defeito de cor (2006), authored by Ana Maria Gonçalves, from the perspective of quare analytics, which inserts intersectionality in the scope of queer theories. Both are called “jimbandas” by the first-person narrator, who places them in the field of homosexual relationships. This word seems to have a significant history, as it appears in the documents of the Holy Inquisition during its operations in colonial Brazil. Despite this fact, it designates an identity group that probably remains barely visible in critical studies of Brazilian literature. In this sense, Gonçalves’s novel updates the debate on the homosexual experiences of Africans in the diaspora, highlighting how the regulatory policy of bodies in a patriarchal Christian country places dissident sexualities and gender expressions under surveillance. Using the decoloniality approach, this study also intends to present a certain epistemic turn by inserting the dissident subject as a producer of body-geolocalized scientific discourse.
