This paper presents a fairly comprehensive account of John Stuart Mill’s conception of human nature. The main features of his view on psychology and on the role played by the institutions in molding the individual character are discussed, as well as some aspects of his ideal of man. These elements are essential to the comprehension of the meaning of Mill’s “economic man”, the abstraction upon which he defines the object of political economy.
