This paper evaluates the recent evolution of labor earnings inequality in the metropolitan Brazil, aiming to quantifying the behavior of inequality within and between groups of workers similar observed characteristics. We use the two most important Brazilian household surveys: PNAD and PME. We find the temporal behavior of inequality is very similar in both data sets, which is very reassuring. Moreover, the between-groups component is more important than the within-groups one. Finally, the factor primarily responsible for the behavior of the between-groups component was the evolution of the returns to education.
