Mortalidade nos estados do Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo e Minas Gerais

In this paper we organize several stylized facts about the quality of the Brazilian health system, trying to analyze, in particularly, the evolution of the main causes of mortality in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Minas Gerais from 1981 to 1995. We use three indicators to measure the quality of the Brazilian health system: the number of years of life lost for each specific cause, the distribution of the main causes of death by age and specific death rate. The number of years of life lost seems to us as an adequate index to measure the level of welfare because it considers also the death cause and the age structure of the population.The distribution of the main cause of death by age groups allowed us to analyze the pattern of mortality since 1980. At last, we made a comparison between the Brazilian and American death patterns.
