Há lugar para teoria em estudos de história econômica? Uma análise das relações entre grupos de interesse, proteção comercial e desempenho econômico de longo prazo

Abstract

This article deals with two main issues: first, the role of economic theory in economic history studies and, second, theoretical and measurement issues regarding the connections between interest groups, trade protection and economic performance in the long run. The article argues that economic theories and models, as exemplified by recent contributions to the analysis of collective action, information problems, contracts, imperfect markets, games, power relations and institutions, can provide valuable concepts, questions and insights to the work of economic historians. At the same time, the article holds that notwithistanding the central role of theoretical models in economic history, they should be seen rather as a starting point for the analysis of ideas, motivations and strategies of economic actors in their historical and institutional context.
