This work estimate a stochastic production frontier forBrazil. Therefore, calculate the Malmquist Total Productivity Index for the regions and 21 Brazilians states on period between 1986 and 1998. This index will be decomposed in the index of variation of the technical efficiency and technological variation. Additionally, it is intended to verify if there is convergence in productivity among the units of the federation. Evidences for the majority of the Brazilian states are presented that their earns of productivity had been more explained by technological variation than technical efficiency variation. Calculating the productivity levels, in the beginning and end of the amostral period, and arrives it conclusion that the dispersion of the productivity levels increasing among the states and diminished among regions, with exception of the region north, the dispersion enters the states of same region increasing.
