Agricultura, liquidez e recessão

The purpose of this study is to analyse the reactions of the agricultural sector to changes in liquidity, particulary in available working capital for production financing. The paper is divided into three sections. First is a framework for an analysis of the influence of liquidity, represented by available savings ancT credit, in farmers' planting decisions. Second is a study of the conditions of liquidity at the macroeconimic level, in that the relationship between available working capital for production financing and the global performance of the economy is analysed. Finally the theoretical arguments developed above are used to analyse the relationship between liquidity and the agricultural sector during the 1980-83 recessionary period of the Brazilian economy. A contraction of real agricultural liquidity is presented which helps to explain the performance of the agricultural sector since 1980.
