This article describes the process of recovery of the Brazilian economy since 1984 and speculates about its significance for the process of political transition. The main argument is that this ongoing reconvery cannot be taken as an indication that Brazil has overcome the main external and internal obstacles to self-sustained growth. Since it is strongly dependent on exports and on the recovery of the American economy, it does not seem sufficient to alleviate internal conflict and may even have perverse effects on it. Political stability and governamental consistency thus become to a considerable extent an ''autonomus" prerequisite for an effective resumption of economic growth.
