The article examines the consolidation of United States preeminence in Brazil between 1930 and 1945 in the context of Brazil's economic relations with other major trade and financial partners, especially Britain. The British position of economic preeminence in Brazil, already diminished after the first World War, was further weakened by the inter-war depression so be for all purposes completely eroded during the Second World War. Delays in the consolidation of "Pax Americana" have to be traced to US unwillingness to take over the leading role and German rather than British resistance as surprisingly little concern was shown in Whitehall for the rapid loss of economic and political weight in Brazil.
