The analysis of a sample of the lists of the 1872 "matricula" (slave registry) in Campinas, Sdo Paulo, suggests a portrait of the Brazilian slave family that is quite different from that which one normally finds in the historiography on the subject In slaveholdings with 10 or more bondsmen, stable sexual unions were common, procriation occured primarily within these unions, and the great majority of children spenttheir formative years in the company of both their parents. There are reasons for concluding that the results for Campinas are representative of the regions of export agriculture in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro as a whole. In sum, despite the negative impact of slavery on the family (especially visible in the case of small holdings), the intimate life of the slave cannot be characterized as "disorganized" or "anomic."
