O ciclo do gado e as tentativas governamentais de controle do preço da carne

The paper analyses a relationship that has been observed between the effects of certain stages of the "beef cattle cycle" and radical governmental interventions in the cattle and beef markets in Brazil. On several occasions since the early 1950s, government has violently attempted - without success - to control beef supplies and prices. These attempts, invariably executed during the increasing phase of the long term price cycle, have produced detrimental long-run consequences without achieving their short-term objectives. The last of these attempts led to the beef crisis which helped to bring the downfall of the Piano Cruzado.
